Throwing in the towel with these Harry Potter books

Harry Potter and puppies. What could be better?

Harry Potter and a puppy. What could be better?

If you’ve been following along you know I’ve been making my way through the Harry Potter books for the last month or so. Right now I’m on book 5…and I’m throwing in the towel.

I’m weak. I know this! I have all the time in the world to read these books, but my heart just isn’t in it. Don’t get me wrong, the books are good. Really good! The stories are complex and rich and I’m in complete awe of JK Rowling’s writing abilities. But it’s too much pressure. It’s starting to feel like a job. Reading is fun, and should not feel like a job! If I would have read these at the pace of most Potter fans – one every couple years – I’m sure I would have downed them in a heartbeat. But I also have friends who were able to make their way through the series continuously and to them I say – good for you!

It’s not to say I won’t read the rest of them eventually, but I’m going to watch the remaining movies soon, so I’m not sure when I’ll get around to reading the rest of them.

Have any of you ever read the Dark Towers series by Stephen King? There are eight books and one novella. It took me two years to read that series because like with this series I hit a wall and needed to take a break. So there, proof that I CAN make it through a long series, it just takes some time.

Note: This is the part of the post where I change topics.

So what have I been doing with all this non-Harry Potter reading time? Ummm, a little thing I like to call PUPPY FEVER!!! The last couple weeks have been spent pouring over tons and tons of puppers and filling out adoption applications and buying pet supplies and reading up on training and checking in with shelters and finally, FINALLY getting approved for a special little guy that we get to go pick up on Friday.

It. Is. HAPPENING (soon).

I’ll have a post all about the new family member in a couple days so for now I’ll leave it to your imagination, but let me bring you through the whirlwind of names our son has selected for this pup (all except the one we’re likely going to go with…cause that’s a surprise).

  • Tutty
  • Neummy (pronounced New-me)
  • Max
  • Raphael (hmmm. shocker)
  • Leonardo (nope – last dog was Uncle Leo…too close)
  • Badoongy face (it’s from The book with no pictures)
  • Duke (a close contender, but no go)
  • Wolfy (he REALLY wants this one, I say no for fear of scaring the kids in our neighborhood if I have to yell for him)
  • Bear (same rationale as above)

I’m sure there were other silly ones – mostly words he makes up – but those are the ones I can recall.

So anyway, to sum up this weird switch-of-topic post. No go on the rest of Harry Potter (but I will watch the rest of the movies). Yes go on a new pupper. Stay tuned!

  1. She’s a great story teller, but JK Rowling needed a better editor for those later books. I’m not surprised you hit a wall in book 5 (my least favorite one of the all). Enjoy your breather – and find something fun to read! The audio books by Jim Dale are amazing – they got my family through many miles of driving.

  2. It’s interesting, I’m rereading them with my kiddo right now, and I am finding a lot more fault with her writing style. She definitely started to rush as the books got popular and people wanted them faster.
